LAURA ABRIL WORLD CAMPION JUNIORS 2008 |

Once upon a time… we begin our story like in every fairytale. This is the how a young Colombian girl and her four other teammates, illuminated the sky of the Val di Sole with their integrity and speed. However, this story started much earlier than in 2008. It began on a dark and stormy night in Livigno, during the World Championship of 2005, when the idea of starting a new team sparked a conversation at the dinner table. Andrea Bianco
soon transformed this casual conversation into an amazing accomplishment. He single-handedly trained his athletes, including the young and sharp Colombian, in quest of bringing them the highest seat in the international spotlight.
The 2008 World Championship proved to be the climax of our story. Our soon-to-be Colombian racer,
Laura Abril, was recognized by Andrea Bianco and she was brought to Italy in order to train and become the best. Laura was able to minimize her faults within a couple of months of hard work and she was ready to compete. Her first race at Fort Williams was a bad experience for our 14 year old Colombian. But she is keen and
quick and she returned to fight against the strongest athletes in the world in her best form in 2008. Laura bewildered us all with her determination to bring home the gold, but in the bottom of our
hearts we were sure that our little “princess” would be able to accomplish her goal. During finals she performed at a level which was unimaginable and she turned her dream into pure gold.
This story has an ending that will stay in our hearts forever; Laura is now the new world champion and our little fairytale, which began four years ago, became a reality.

However, Laura was not the only protagonist in this fable,
even though the trophy definitely goes to her, we must
not overlook our other athletes who fought like lions too.
We must recognize Catriel Soto and Paolo Montoya
for their hard work and perseverance during the race.
Unfortunately, Rodolfo Torres and Jhon Jairo Botero had
to withdraw from the race. Soto and Torres did not
have the best of luck, during the first lap of the race
they both fell while they were in the top 20.
When Soto fell his brake became dysfunctional,
but he fought hard and he regained his position by
the end of the race. However, Torres, who had the
worst luck, could not race because his chain broke
and he could not compete. Paolo Montoya had a less
problematic race than his fellow teammates, even
thought the Coast Rican started behind he fought diligently and he ended the race at 31.
This championship cannot let us down, because Laura
has the gold, but above all, the athletes gained their
honor because they fought with all of their heart until
the very end. |
